A Science Matters Lunch & Learn presented in partnership with and hosted by the Kansas City Public Library. This program will be presented in-person at Kansas City Public Library-Central Library in the Helzberg Auditorium.
Stuart Clausen is the Aquatics Curator at the Kansas City Zoo. In his position, he serves as the supervisor for teams responsible for the care of the polar bears, river otters, penguins, stingrays, and the new aquarium currently under construction and expected to open in the Fall of 2023. For that project, he is tasked with designing, planning, and acquiring the living collection for the largest single capital project in the zoo’s history. When finished, the aquarium will hold over 600,000 gallons of saltwater, and be home to over 8000 individual animals, effectively increasing the zoo’s current animal population by approximately 400%. Stuart is relatively new to the Kansas City area and the zoo, having been here less than a year. He and his family relocated from Pittsburgh, PA, where he served as the Assistant Curator for Aquatic Life at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. In his 20 years in the aquarium industry, Stuart has also worked at the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, AK, Omaha, NE’s Henry Doorly Zoo, the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, OR, and Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife in Springfield, MO.”
Stuart’s presentation will focus on Aquarium Science as a field of study and industry, and how Kansas City Zoo’s new aquarium fits in an exciting and developing field where science, learning, and family entertainment meet.
